7619398An interesting take on the vampire mythos.

Welcome to the American west when it was still wild, a lawman named Book, and a candy chompin outlaw named sweet.

Now welcome to 1920s L.A and two young, aspiring actresses named Pearl and Hat.

So the story behind all this is that the European vampires that we all know and love are alive and well in the burgeoning young Americas, and they want two things: blood and money.

As a result, they own much of the big businesses and are well known as wealthy businessmen…albeit businessmen with rather pallid complexions.  But then they cross paths with Sweet who tries to rob one of their banks and gets killed trying to escape vampire justice.  A vampire is injured in the chase, bleeds on Sweet, and a new vampire is born.

Think Blade only with the blood lust.  Sweet has all the strengths of the European vampires, but none of their weaknesses to wood, garlic, sunlight, and water.  He’s stronger, faster, and more bloodthirsty than they are, and a new silent war breaks out in the shadowy back alleys of the young US of A.  A war between the European and American vampires.

Sweet is the only one of his kind until he meets young Pearl, a woman who is spoon fed to vampires and dies, only to be resurrected for some as-yet-unknown reason by Sweet.

And there you have the start of the American Vampire franchise.  We see Sweet and Pearl’s origins story, as well as the groundwork being laid for the much needed secret society that is sworn to destroy all vampires, foreign and domestic.

I’ve been hearing so much about this series and I’m glad I’ve given it a shot.  For me, it really lives up to the hype I’ve been hearing.

Enjoy folks.

Rolling on with American Vampire #2!

9908518While trafficking in a bestselling sub-genre, AMERICAN VAMPIRE introduces a new strain of vampire — a more muscular and vicious species, born of the American West.

It’s Las Vegas circa 1935, and Skinner Sweet and our gal Pearl are about to learn the hard way that the bloodsuckers in Hollywood were nothing compared to what awaits them in Sin City.

In just a few short years, young police Chief Cash McCogan has watched his native city of Las Vegas go from cow-town to wild, glittering boomtown. And when the bodies of prominent businessmen start showing up drained of blood, Chief McCogan finds himself facing a threat much darker and deadlier than anything he could have imagined . . . and the only sure bet in town is that Skinner and Pearl are right in the thick of it.
