6940494So the second and final prequel novel based on my god of the 360 console Dragon Age has passed through my reading log and I was not disappointed.

The Calling picks up about nine years after Dragon Age Stolen Throne leaves off.  Rowan is dead, Maric is depressed, Loghain is all but ruling the country of Fereldan and Cailin is almost nine years old.  When one day a group of Grey Wardens comes calling for aid with none other than Duncan, the Grey Warden from the game best known for recruiting the main character and inducting them into the Grey Wardens.

Lots of back story gets revealed here for the game and subsequent expansions.  We see the Architect from Awakening and learn that he’s been at his schemes for some time.  You learn how the dwarf Utha joins his cause.  We still don’t know how Maric disappeared to yet as he returns safe and sound, but we do discover the other half of the parentage of another key character from the game.  That’s right, here it’s finally revealed who Alistair’s mother really was.  Hint: she wasn’t a serving maid in a castle….

Two of four in the series, and so long as Gaider has a hand in them, I doubt any of them will disappoint.
