2003625Followers of the Immortals After Dark series will like this one.  Here we have Cadeon, that lovable, roguish demon prince claiming the love of his life, a human/valkyrie/fury hybrid in the form of a meek little nerd girl named Holly.  Who also just so happens to be a female of the Lore ordained to give birth to a child of ultimate good or evil depending on the father.

So, no pressure right?

But Holly is wanted by an evil sorcerer who wants to use her as a brood mare, and just so happens to have the one thing in the universe that can help Cadeon recover the crown his brother lost to another equally evil sorcerer.

The plan:  The two brothers take Holly, hand her over to the horny sorcerer.  Horny sorcerer gives them weapon to kill usurper sorcerer.  Brothers go kill usurper sorcerer, and everyone lives happily ever after.

Well, except for Holly and Cadeon.

Because Cadeon and his brother both know that Holly is Cadeon’s fated mate.  The only problem is the brother will sacrifice ANYTHING to get his crown back, including his brother Cadeon’s mate, and due to an overwhelmingly undeserved guilt complex Cadeon is willing to give/risk everything to help his brother out.

And of course poor, naive, timid Holly is shuttled around, manipulated, lied to, and left in the dark until the last minute.

Everything all works out in the end, but I am really thinking the women in these books are letting their menfolk off too easy.  They’re all lied to, manipulated, and whatnot, and not once have any of them given their men a good thumping for being such an idiot.  It’s all silent treatment for a few days/weeks, then they meet up, make up, and live happily ever after.

I dunno, maybe it’s the violent Irish female in me that’s coming out when I read these things. 😀

I was kinda wanting to wait on this a wee bit longer, but I totally caved.  Going into the second of the Forgotten Realms Cormyr Saga, Beyond the High Road by Troy Denning.

49368The seer Alaundo prophesied that seven scourges would sweep Cormyr way in ruin. For centuries the royal family has stood watch against that day and devoted their lives to the protection of the realm.

But in a time when their ancient guardians slumber and their most loyal servants disappear, when a terrible evil prepares to sweep down upon their home — who will protect the royal family?
