291553One of the infamous locations of the Realms, Undermountain is a huge labrynthian maze carved deep into the heart of a mountain by the equally infamous City of Splendors, Waterdeep.  Built by the supposedly long lost mad wizard Halaster for his own indiscrutible purposes, Undermountain is full of puzzles, pitfalls, fiends and grotesqueries of all kinds.  But of course what magical death trap dungeon would be complete without the lure of gold that draws would be heroes of all kinds to seek their fame and fourtune or meet their death.

But Artek the Knife, orc blooded master thief of Waterdeep is not one of them.  Hired by one lordling to find another that has gotten lost in the maze of Undermountain, Atrek has two days to get in, find the lordling, get out, and live.

Betrayed at every turn, hunted and running from some of the foulest creatures Undermountain has to offer, Artek teams up with a dubious wizard, a talking skull and a friendly gargoyle in his quest for the missing lordling and the surface world.  But Undermountain is never an easy trek, and the group’s travels lead them ever deeper into the maze in search of the mad wizard’s apprentices in an attempt to find their escape.

So far the first of the Nobles series where the main character is not an actual noble or becomes one in the end, Escape From Undermountain was a fantastic read that I could not put down.  And also one of the few stories where the guy doesn’t get the girl in the end…

Let’s see if we can knock out the rest of the Nobles Saga shall we?  Mage in the Iron Mask, book 4 by Brian M. Thompson.

291565Mulmaster, nicknamed the “City of Danger”, is the next stop on Volothamp Geddarm’s research trip for his upcoming Guide to the Monsoon, and maybe his final resting place when the bailing out of a friend from the Mulmaster prison embroils Volo in a sinister plot that threatens the tenuous political stability of all Faerun.
