20613610With the next installment of the Dragon Age video game franchise coming ever closer, how could I resist catching up on the series written in the same wold?

Dragon Age Last Flight is my favorite of the Dragon Age books so far.  Taking place during the fourth Blight, Last Flight follows the journey of an elven mage-turned-Warden on her path of training to become a griffon rider…and a blood mage.

Sacrifices must always be made in times of war, and the fourth blight is no exception.  Raging for over ten years, the Wardens and their allies were desperate to end the Blight so they turned to one of their most precious assets, the griffons, and corrupted them.  Our anti-hero Warden had discovered a way to corrupt the griffons with the taint of the Blight, turning them into rage maddened killing machines, and giving the Wardens and their allies the edge they thought they needed to win the war.

Little did she know what she did to some would doom them all.

A fascinating and chilling account of the fall of the Wardens, their griffons, and the subsequent extinction of the entire species.  That is, until a hidden clutch of eggs is discovered after being held in magical stasis for 400 years….

Continuing on with the third installment in the Mortal Instruments series, City of Glass by Cassandra Claire.

3777732To save her mother’s life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters – never mind that entering the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death. To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight.

As Clary uncovers more about her family’s past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadowhunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadowhunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he’s willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her newfound powers to help save the Glass City – whatever the cost?

Love is a mortal sin and the secrets of the past prove deadly as Clary and Jace face down Valentine in the third installment of the New York Times bestselling series The Mortal Instruments.
