239069I LOVED THIS BOOK! The first in one of Salvatore’s earlier works the Spearwielder’s Tale, The Woods Out Back hit really close to home for me, but in a good way.

The story is about a young boy named Gary Ledger who loves to read fantasy books and spends his days at his dead end job day dreaming to make the day go by faster.  Then one day he finds out fairy tales are real when he’s kidnapped and taken to Tir Na n’Og in the land of Faerie to fulfill and ancient prophecy with a haughty elf, surly dwarf, and mischievous leprechaun.

The whole thing reminded me strongly of the Magic Kingdom of Landover series, where a man from our world crosses the border into a magical world and is made king.  Young Gary hasn’t been made king yet, but I feel that’s where the series is heading.  That and it also reminded me of the Hobbit, since Gary has to travel to a lonely mountain peak to face down a dragon.

Trolls, goblins, giants, monsters, a dragon and and evil scorceress make this one hell of an adventure tale.  Once I started, I couldn’t stop and now I can’t wait to get into the next one, Dragon’s Dagger.

But let’s try and tie up something else first shall we?  The Giant Among Us, second in the Twilight Giants series by Troy Denning next.

291732The second title in a classic trilogy about the giants of the Forgotten Realms world.

Giants Among Us is the second novel in a trilogy that deals with the giants of the Forgotten Realms setting.

Giants are little written about, and this trilogy, written by New York Times best-selling author Troy Denning ten years ago, was
the first to detail them.
