291508One of the older Realms books, The Shadow Stone is a stand alone story about a young boy, hunted and persecuted, who stumbles upon an elven mage in his attempt to escape his pursuers and discovers and innate ability for magic.  The mage takes him in and teaches him, but in impatiences of a human youth prove to be too much and our hero is eventually left to pursue a different path after studying elven magic for several years.

And what a path that turns out to be!  Shadow Stone is fascinating if only for the way it chronicles how easy it is for a good mage to turn evil through the ambiguous virtues of ambition and thirst for knowledge.

Thankfully our hero is able to avoid this fate but it was a close call that almost cost him his life on more than one occasion.  But while he was able to save himself, the same cannot be true for all those he holds dear.

Facing off against a centuries old sorcerer in the Shadowrealm, our hero and his friends must fight to save the Weave, the very source of magic itself in Faerun, from being stolen and corrupted by those who would make themselves gods.

Also the first book I’ve read that really chronicles the life of a magic user from novice to grand mage, The Shadow Stone was quite the enjoyable and fascinating read.
