19856So! Kiva the Magehound has been defeated.  The Laraken, a creature of magic that feasts upon the same is no more.  The door to the elemental plane of water is dealt with.  There’s nothing more for Matteo and Tzigone to do now but revel in being heroes.

Or so they think.

Oh, and they have to search for Tzigone’s mother.

But unearthing such secrets comes with a price.  Matteo stands to lose his best friend to Kiva’s new machination, or to the elf-blooded amazon warriors she gathers to her side.  Most of this book focuses on the secrets that everyone is hiding.  From the King to Kiva to Matteo and Tzigone themselves.  Though thankfully they don’t hide their secret from each other.  It can get kind of confusing knowing who’s siding with whom and what they’re planning and for whom.

Matteo and Tzigone are exposed to more truths about their pasts, sometimes gaining heart and sometimes falling into despair.

A full scale invasion by a foreign power is being planned by an inside source, the queen is madder than a hatter, and aside from unintentionally creating a clockwork army to be used against her own people is not at all what she seems, the gate to the plane of water is still a threat, a mad necromancer returns, and even the Unseelie make an appearance.

All in all just another day for Matteo and Tzigone.

We’re going to take a wee break before diving into the last book because I finally got my hands on Shattered!  Latest in the Iron Druid Chronicles by David Herne.  Can’t wait!

16280678For nearly two thousand years, only one Druid has walked the Earth—Atticus O’Sullivan, the Iron Druid, whose sharp wit and sharp sword have kept him alive as he’s been pursued by a pantheon of hostile deities. Now he’s got company.

Atticus’s apprentice Granuaile is at last a full Druid herself. What’s more, Atticus has defrosted an archdruid long ago frozen in time, a father figure (of sorts) who now goes by the modern equivalent of his old Irish name: Owen Kennedy.

And Owen has some catching up to do.

As the trio of Druids deals with pestilence-spreading demons, bacon-loving yeti, fierce flying foxes, and frenzied Fae, they’re hoping that this time, three’s a charm.
