291483Second in the Return of the Arch Wizards trilogy, we return to see our hero losing the battle against his ‘shadow self’, an internal manifestation of all the negative or opposite aspects of one’s personality, a side effect of using the Shadow Weave without proper training.

Galeon’s shadow self is slowly taking over, causing him to endanger his friends and sacrifice all the good relationships in his life.  Finally, the near death of his stone giant friend Aris at last breaks through to him and he swears never to touch shadow magic again, a vow he is miraculously able to keep for the most part despite some near misses for the rest of the book, but we’ll see how long that lasts in The Summoning.

The true form of the shades of…well…Shade…are finally brought to light.  The Heartlands and major governments of Faerun are banding together to try and turn back the Shadowvar threat before too many lives are lost.  For not only are the phaerim attacking Evereska, but in an attempt to reclaim their ancestral homelands the Shadowvar are melting the High Ice to the north, causing changes to weather patterns across the continent, resulting in floods, draughts, and -in the case of Waterdeep- crippling snows and blizzards.

Hopefully enough forces shall be amassed and the Shadowvar beaten back before it’s too late.

Interested to see where Gaeleon and the human woman Vala’s relationship goes next, especially after his shadow self all but accused her of infidelity.

Back to Shannara for now tho.  On a bit of a kick and looking to finish up the few books I have leftover of the series.  Wards of Faerie, first in the Dark Legacy trilogy next.
