71811First in the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs and I must say I am disappointed in myself that I did not reach out and try this series sooner.

I’ve known about Patricia Briggs’ works for a long time, both her Mercy Thompson and Alpha and Omega series.  But I had always put off picking either of them up as I’ve had my hands full with more than enough series to take up my time.  But when hunting for something new to try, I finally gave in.

And I am so glad I did.  Mercedes Thompson-Mercy to her friends-is a walker who can shape shift into a coyote at will.  Living in the Tri Cities area, raised by werewolves, she makes her living as a mechanic by day, and frolics with creatures of myth at night.

Ok maybe frolic isn’t the right word…

Set in today’s time, Mercy’s world is mostly ignorant  of the things that go bump in the night.  As science and technology left fewer corners for magic to hide in, some higher ups in the magic creature hierarchy called the Grey Lords decided to forcibly out all the cute and cuddly fae creatures before science did in an attempt to control the outcome.

It kinda worked.  Now there was a new race to be racist against, but all other creatures, werewolves, vampires, and the nastier of the fae, are still living secret lives.  For now.

This is very much a intro book.  The Alpha of the local werewolf pack gets attacked and his daughter abducted.  The whole ‘why’ behind it is rather confusing, but overall it serves as a good intro to the world setting as it delves into the three different species and their societal inner workings.

So overall I enjoyed it, and am very much looking forward to the next one.

But first! Back to the Noble Dead Saga with Dog in the Dark.

15808414Magiere, Leesil, and elven dog Chap are continuing their quest to find the powerful Orb of Air. But they are not alone. Aging elven assassin Brot’an has forced his company on them while also offering his protection. Chap doesn’t believe his ruse, however.

As they sail, Magiere struggles with her own dark nature, using Leesil’s love as an anchor to keep her grounded. For the personal price she paid to procure the Orb of Fire was more than she thought—and more than she wants to reveal to anyone.

But that is exactly what the cunning Brot’an wants to know. And he is willing to do whatever it takes—even if he must reveal his own dreaded secrets, which may cost the entire party their lives…and their very souls.
