291734First in the loosely related Empires series, this series focuses on older, ancient empires that no longer exist in the current Realms timeline.  Star of Cursrah focuses on the city of Cursrah, and the life of one of its princesses, Aminstar.

Aminstar is young, beautiful, and spoiled rotten.  She often slips her guards to frolic in the city with her two best friends: a soldier and a architect’s apprentice.  They scamper around and cause mischief both intended and unintentional like any group of friends their age.  With Star increasingly watched and

The story is split between Cursrah and three similar friends in modern Realms Memmnon.  Cursrah, after laying under the sands for centuries, is reawakened, along with the sleeping army and power mad king.  But Aminstar’s fate in the end is truly heart wrenching, and only the efforts of the reincarnation of her and her two best friends free her and save their own home in the process.

While I enjoyed the story as a whole, what I found most interesting is the religion of Cursrah.  A mix of Egyptian and Islamic with a god like priest king, and continuous praises to the powerful genie that legends say created Cursrah.

Looking forward to what the other Lost Empires have in store, but for now we’re back to the Hunter and Omega series with Hunting Ground next.
