15743711Things turn out mostly as expected here in Witch Wraith, finishing off the Dark Legacy trilogy.  Picking up again immediately where Bloodfire left off, Arling has been wounded and taken by the Federation, Aphenglow and her elven hunter track her down.  Redden seeks Grianne with Mirai and the Rovers.  Quickening seeks to rescue Railing who is still a prisoner of the Straken Lord.  And coincidentally, has led a demon army out of the Forbidding and lays siege to the human town of Airshag, home of the Federation.

Everything ends pretty much as you wold expect, despite the dire beginnings.  Aphen and Arling quicken the seed of the Ellcrys in the Bloodfire, and aside from a bit of a roadblock of the Federation Prime Minister trying to steal Arling and all the glory, the sisters are able to to renew the Ellcrys and lock the demons away again, albeit at the cost of Aphen’s elven hunter.

Quickening frees Railing and in an attempt to evade recapture return to the Forbidding and find the lost Elfstones, only to lose them again as the demons are locked away.

Redden and Mirai finally hook up and are able to locate the aerid of Grianne and sucessfully petition the Tanequil to release and aspect of Grianne: the Ilse Witch.  This I personally expected.  The Ilse Witch and Grianne are two seperate creatures, and the Ilse Witch’s only desire is to kill the Straken Lord and take his place ruling over the demons of the Forbidding.  Which she sucessfuly does, and gets locked away in the Forbidding with the rest of them.

All in all, a good ending to the trilogy.  Well written, well paced, no surprises, but a good read.  I can’t help but wonder what comes next for Shannara.  Like really, what else is there to do?

But while we wait for the next batch of Shannara books, let’s move onto the last of the Alpha and Omega series, Dead Heat next.

22571699For once, mated werewolves Charles and Anna are not traveling because of Charles’s role as his father’s enforcer. This time, their trip to Arizona is purely personal, as Charles plans to buy Anna a horse for her birthday. Or at least it starts out that way…

Charles and Anna soon discover that a dangerous Fae being is on the loose, replacing human children with simulacrums. The Fae’s cold war with humanity is about to heat up—and Charles and Anna are in the cross fire.
