22571699Last in the Alpha and Omega series to date, and compared to the rest of the series the title doesn’t really have a resonance with the rest of the story.

Dead Heat implies horse racing or racing in general where the final participants are racing neck in neck and you’re not really sure who would win.  And while there are horses in this story, they’re all showhorses and there is nothing to do with racing throughout the whole book.

But aside from that it was pretty good.  Charles finally introduces Anna to some friends of his, all mortal, one dying of cancer with a werewolf father who demands that his son be turned, even against his will.  Throw into the mix missing children with magical constructs left in their place while the fae responsible for their kidnapping -who was deliberately set loose by the Grey Lords- feed upon them, WITH Charles and Anna arguing about having children, and Dead Heat is anything but boring.

Really looking forward to how the series continues since war has essentially been declared between humans and fae and now the fae are letting the last of their big bad nasties run amok.

But for now we’re left waiting and wanting and trying new things lol.  Here’s to Jacqueline Carey’s Godslayer duology with Banewreaker next.
