No Rest for the Good…

25591187Hilltop, Alexandria, and The Kingdom are all thriving communities.  Walls, mills, stables, gardens, blacksmiths, each one slowly and individually marching back towards where civilization used to be before the zombie plague wiped everything out, sharing goods, information, people, and technology among each other.

And Rick has a lot of growing up to do as a father.  He finally let’s Carl spread his wings and fly off to Hilltop to apprentice as a blacksmith.  But during a routine Hilltop patrol, the riders are cashed by walkers, and hear them whispering.  Then another group of walkers use knives to attack another patrol group.

Thankfully for the sanity of everyone involved, the zombies are not talking or wielding weapons all of a sudden.  Turns out there is another group of people who are actually living among the zombies and wearing their skin to blend in. Creepy much?

The daughter of their leader is captured and befriends Carl, leading him to chase after her when she is sent back to her people, and Rick of course to follow in soon after, to discover this new enemy has an army of walkers essentially at their command.  So when they discover the Whisperers have set up a boundry line made up of the heads of some of their friends, Andrea sums it up perfectly when she asks Rick what do they do now.

The next year is going to be interesting for the Walking Dead.  Looking forward to it.

Speaking of next year, Happy New Year everyone!  We’ll see you tomorrow for Ja No Read Mo 2016!

Virus Warfare in the Age of Zombies

24567929Here the last of the communities join together at Hilltop to invite an epic last stand against Negan, which he takes up and actually does something brilliant.

Rather than going in shooting and hoping to kill, Negan and his followers foul up their knives and other melee weapons in zombie gunk so that the slightest scratch will take down their opponents no matter how minor or serious the wound.  All they had to do was sit back and wait and let the disease take its course, wiping out the communities from the inside out.

Which mostly works.  Unknown to Negan, one of his men is on Rick’s side, and when there is a chance to take out Rick with a contaminated weapon, it’s switched out for a clean one so the great leader can keep on keeping on.

Which he does in trying one last time to get Negan to come over to their way of thinking, which seems to work!  Only Rick doesn’t take any chances and slices Negan’s throat to get his men to fall back and cooperate, ending the stand off between the Saviors and the other communities, and taking Negan as the first prisoner of a new civilization.

Which incidentally enough is how book 11 ends, with the communities of Alexandria, Hilltop, and the Kingdom building a new civilization.

So let’s see were that takes us in book 12.  Going to be a bit of a squeeze, but let’s try and get it done before the end of the year.

After Rick delivers Carl to Hilltop to start their new lives apart, a threat emerges from within the walker hordes that no one could expect. A threat that will leave readers speechless.
Wow…they’re really into giving it away aren’t they…

22129926THIS MEANS WAR!!!!

Yeah all I got running through my mind right now is Nickelback’s This Means War as I write this.

This is all about Negan and Rick, and Rick trying to bring the three communities of Alexandraia, Hilltop and The Kingdom together to take Negan out.

Aaaaannd that’s pretty much it.  Plotting, planning, secret rendezvous, actually got a wee bit boring at times cuz it was all talk talk talk talk talk.

There was a false start when Negan makes an unplanned visit to Alexandria and Rick sees an opportunity to take him out with minimal casualties, only to get his ass handed to him and eventually the partial destruction of Alexandria.  That leads to some lost of trust with the leaders of the other communities, but as Maggie says “I believe in Rick Grimes”.  And eventually so does everyone else.

Still a wee bit of time to go until the end of the year, so we’re going to move on with book 11 next.

24567929After Alexandria is destroyed by Negan, the remaining communities unite for one last stand against the Saviors. The aftermath to their war leads to the biggest status quo change in the history of this acclaimed series.

18174114As a Christmas gift to myself (in the form of giftcards from other people lol) I decided to finally catch myself up on The Walking Dead and bought books 9-12 as I already had 1-8.

Turns out, I already read 9 when I worked at Indigo.  I would read the smaller numbered volumes as they came out.  I still read it all, as it had been so long since I read any of the story, but yeah.  It was mostly just a recap for me.

Anyways, here in book nine Rick and friends have discovered a few other communities around and are trying to work with them…mostly.  They discovered the community of Hilltop which was being bullied by the ‘community’ of the Saviors.  Thugs and bad men who demanded half of everything Hilltop produced to take care of their own people.  Hilltop asks Rick and company to take care of the Saviors and their leader Negan which…doesn’t turn out very well at all.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that Glenn dies in the TV show.  Well this is where he dies in the graphic novels, as a way to get Rick and the others in line, and Carl stows away on the Saviors convoy in an attempt to take out Negan. Which doesn’t work very well either.

Book 9 ends essentially with Rick seeming to roll over to the Saviors and join Hilltop and another community the Kingdom.  But we all know Rick Effing Grimes don’t roll over for no one.  So it’ll be interesting to see where book 10 goes.

Speaking of….there’s still time before the New Year so let’s check out The Walking Dead Book 10.

22129926Rick’s treaty with Negan and the Saviors is pushed to the limit, as both sides march toward ALL OUT WAR!

Yeah…short and sweet…

291737WOOT!  Just in time for Christmas, I hit my goal of 100 books for the year!  Boo yeah! Normally I would try and crack another one or two before the end of the year, but I’m distracted by other shiny things right now so I might not make it and just start up again next month with Ja No Read Mo.  But we’ll see…

BUT OH DA FEELZ!

We come to Westgate where Alias and Dragonbait arrive on scene and are quickly accosted by a low level pair of thugs from the infamous Night Masks thieves guild, a guild that rules Westgate in all but name.

After dealing several humiliating blows to the collective ego of the guild, Alias and Dragonbait are recruited by the nobility to combat the threat of the Night Masks and bring down their leader the Faceless.

With the help of a sage and local thespian, they’re pretty much able to do just that, althought it requires a jaunt into an inter-dimentional pocket plane which was intended to be the prison of a mad mage, and Alias gets her heart broken in the process.

It was really interesting for me reading this, as I was playing Neverwinter Nights Mysteries of Westgate at the same time and kept looking for correlations between the book and the game.  There are a few things for those who are actively looking for them and it made both reading the book and playing the game more interesting and interactive.

Yeah…I totally fan girled…

Anways that’s it for the 100th book of 2015!  But wait! There’s more!  Since we still have a wee bit of time before the year ends let’s keep the ball rolling!  I recently acquired the last few books of the Walking Dead series so let’s see if I can put aside the other shiny things long enough get through them before year’s end.  Next up: The Walking Dead Book 9

18174114In this volume of the New York Times Bestselling survival horror, Rick and his band of survivors work to build a larger network of thriving communities. But Negan and his Saviors prove to be a larger threat than they could have imagined. Crossing them will lead to The Walking Dead’s most harrowing story since the Governor’s reign of terror!
