757428Seventh in the Harper series and written by a familiar Realms author Mark Anthony. This one really drew me in and to be honest I’m not sure why. I think maybe because the story was fascinating to me. Focusing on Caledon Calorian, a disillusioned former Harper who returns to his hometown only to find it under the control of a Zentarim lord. And not just any lord, but the very one that throttled the love of his life seven years earlier.

This lady lording has been kidnapping citizens to dig beneath her tower fortress for an item more ancient than…well…most anything. The Gem of Shadows which is supposedly locked away in -you guessed it- the crypt of an ancient being called the Shadow King.

I love it when a story comes together don’t you?

Anyways, aided by a young idealistic Harper Caledon reforms his adventuring troop of years past using friends old and new, and sets forth on a quest to free his hometown from the hold of the of the Black Network. And unbeknownst to him, he is in possession of the only thing that can keep this ancient from rising again. A rare, ancient magic called Shadowmagic.

Little surprised this didn’t have more to do with the dark goddess of night Shat since its all about shadows and secrets, but otherwise i enjoyed it. I liked the characters presented and of course in the end Caledon has his broken heart mended and lives happily ever after.

Or a least we hope so…
