7462353Third and final installment of the Blades of the Moonsea trilogy and it brings our hero full circle to face his past.  In an attempt to loosen the hold that his elven nemesis has in Hulberg, our hero must return to the place where their feud began to bring the angry mage down: Myth Drannor.

Reclaimed mostly from the demonic hordes that had ruled it for so long, Myth Drannor has once again become a place of beauty filled with elven song and laughter.  It was here Geran learned to be a bladesinger and fell in love with an elven lass his nemesis had his eye on.

Under pain of death to never return to Myth Drannor, Geran enlists the aid of old friends and sneaks into the city, into crypts still haunted by demons to seek out the means to take out his foe.  Then, after being captured by elves, beaten by demons both real and personal, Geran escapes the city and returns to Hulberg for a final showdown.

An ok series overall. I’ve read better and I’ve read worse.  I wish the relationship between Geran and his lady love ended a bit more certainly, and that we knew more about her, the mysterious man who fathered her child, as well as the cult she fell in with that led her to lie with the man in the first place.  Would have been interesting to find out if the daughter was related to Geran’s family in some way.

Ah well.  Guess we’ll never know.

Now we’re going to start something I have really been looking forward to, the new Sage of Shadowdale series by Ed Greenwood featuring everyone’s favorite Old Mage Elminster.  Elminster Must Die is next.

7748327When the goddess of magic was murdered, Elminster’s world shattered. Once the most powerful wizard in the world, immortal, beloved of the goddess of magic, and the bane of villainy, he is now a tired old man. He is powerful but mortal, and with all the enemies a man who makes a habit of saving the world tends to accumulate. To make matters worse, Elminster has needs -feeding powerful magic items to the Simbul, his lover, is the only thing that keeps her sane- but their increasingly risky collection leads his enemies right to him.
