This is an absolutely beautiful book.  The story of two black maids working for white women in 1960s Jacksonville Mississippi.  A white woman, the daughter of a plantation owner, has dreams of becoming a writer and wants to take down their stories.

There are references to Martin Luther King and the events that sparked the civil rights movement, and overall it’s just a wonderfully touching account of the lives of three very different women and their polar opposite upbringings.

It shows how color and class are no real division when it comes to the love and bonds of friendship and femininity.
