One of the original Forgotten Realms books, I read this by July 1st 201.
It is the first in the Netheril trilogy written by Clayton Emery and depicts the beginning of the fall of Netheril and the wizards who played gods in those long ago days.
And…yeah…that pretty much sums that up.
